ANKASecure Composite Signature/Verification Micro-Benchmark

Overview

This document describes the methodology, scope, and results of the SecureCore Composite Signature/Verification Micro-Benchmark, a performance test suite designed to evaluate the cryptographic efficiency of COMPOSITE_SIGNATURE composite keys in the AnkaSecure system.

This benchmark systematically measures composite signing and composite verification performance for hybrid composite keys that combine classical and post-quantum signature algorithms across multiple payload sizes. All outputs use JWS General JSON Serialization (RFC 7515 §7.2.1) with one composite signature, providing empirical evidence of the platform's ability to deliver quantum-resistant signatures with acceptable performance overhead.

Timings owed to a re-measurement

Every timing, CPU and heap figure on this page — the result tables, the CSV sample, the analysis and the conclusions drawn from them — was measured on 2026-01-18, when a composite key produced two separate signatures over the payload. The platform's composite key produces one composite signature over the JWS Signing Input (the IETF composite ML-DSA construction, described below). No timing has been measured for that construction yet, so no figure on this page describes it: the figures below are the earlier construction's and must not be quoted as the performance of the current one. The method, the formats and the signature sizes on this page are current.

The figures are owed to a measurement run of SCPerformanceEnhancedCompositeSignatureTest in ankasecure-core-api (mvn test -Dsc.suite.exclude=none -Dgroups=performance -Dtest=SCPerformanceEnhancedCompositeSignatureTest), and are replaced with that run's output, dated, when it is made.

Objectives

The goals of this benchmark are to:

  • Validate the efficiency and scalability of SecureCore's composite signature operations.

  • Compare classical and post-quantum algorithm combinations.

  • Quantify the performance overhead of composite (two-component) signature verification.

  • Provide externally auditable evidence of the platform's enterprise-grade quantum-resistant signing capabilities.

Scope

  • Operations:

    • Composite signing that produces a JWS General JSON Serialization token with one composite signature (the ML-DSA signature followed by the classical signature)
    • Composite verification, which is valid only when both components verify
  • Composite Mode: COMPOSITE_SIGNATURE

    • Combines classical signature with post-quantum signature
    • All-or-nothing verification: both components must verify
    • Security level difference constraint: ≤ 2 steps
    • Only RECOMMENDED algorithms with allowedInComposite=true
  • Algorithms Tested: 11 valid combinations discovered dynamically from the algorithm catalog:

    • Classical Signatures: Ed25519, Ed448, P-256, P-384 (EC-521 excluded due to DER encoding edge cases)
    • PQC Signatures: ML-DSA-44, ML-DSA-65, ML-DSA-87
  • Payload Sizes: 8 input sizes from 1 KiB to 5 MiB:

    • 1 KiB, 5 KiB, 10 KiB, 50 KiB, 100 KiB, 500 KiB, 1 MiB, 5 MiB
  • Iteration Strategy:

    • Warm-up iterations: 5 (configurable via sc.perf.warmup)
    • Measurement iterations: 10 (configurable via sc.perf.measurements)
  • Total Measurements: 88 (11 combinations × 8 payload sizes)

Algorithm Taxonomy

Classical Signature Algorithms (4 algorithms)

Edwards-Curve Digital Signature Algorithm (EdDSA):

  • Ed25519 (Curve25519, security level 2)
  • Ed448 (Curve448, security level 3)

ECDSA (Elliptic Curve Digital Signature Algorithm, NIST curves):

  • P-256 (NIST P-256/secp256r1, security level 2)
  • P-384 (NIST P-384/secp384r1, security level 3)

Note: EC-521 (security level 4) is excluded from the benchmark due to DER encoding edge cases in composite signature construction.

Post-Quantum Signature Algorithms (3 algorithms)

ML-DSA (NIST FIPS 204 - Module-Lattice-Based Digital Signature Algorithm, formerly Dilithium):

  • ML-DSA-44 (security level 2)
  • ML-DSA-65 (security level 3)
  • ML-DSA-87 (security level 5)

Note: FALCON is excluded via allowedInComposite=false catalog flag (not NIST FIPS 204, lacks standardization maturity for composite keys).

Valid Combinations (11 total)

The benchmark dynamically discovers valid combinations using:

  • Security level difference ≤ 2 (e.g., Ed25519 L2 + ML-DSA-44 L2 ✅, Ed25519 L2 + ML-DSA-87 L5 ❌)
  • RECOMMENDED status only
  • Catalog flag: allowedInComposite=true
  • Exclusion filter: EC-521 filtered out in test parameter source

Example combinations:

  • Ed25519 + ML-DSA-44 (L2 + L2 = Δ0)
  • Ed25519 + ML-DSA-65 (L2 + L3 = Δ1)
  • Ed448 + ML-DSA-65 (L3 + L3 = Δ0)
  • P-256 + ML-DSA-44 (L2 + L2 = Δ0)
  • P-384 + ML-DSA-65 (L3 + L3 = Δ0)
  • P-384 + ML-DSA-87 (L3 + L5 = Δ2)

How It Works

🔁 Iteration Process

  1. Composite Key Generation: A fresh composite key is generated with:

    • Mode: COMPOSITE_SIGNATURE
    • Components: classical algorithm (role="classical") + PQC algorithm (role="pqc")
    • Standard test parameters: 100K max usage, 365-day expiry
  2. Warm-up Loop: The system runs several sign/verify operations to stabilize JIT compilation and memory allocation.

  3. Measurement Loop: The following metrics are collected per iteration:

    • Wall-clock time for signing and verification (milliseconds)
    • Thread-level CPU time for signing and verification (milliseconds)
    • Heap memory delta during signing and verification (KiB)
  4. Validation:

    • The verification result must be true (both components valid).
    • The benchmark fails the iteration if verification returns false or signature is null.

🔐 Composite Signing Process

Signing (composite signature generation):

  1. Build the protected header (composite alg, kid, ank_kv, iat, and exp when validityDays is requested) and form M, the JWS Signing Input (RFC 7515 §5.1)
  2. Pre-hash M with the pairing's PH (SHA-256, SHA-512 or SHAKE256) and form the message representative M'
  3. Sign M' with ML-DSA, passing the pairing's Label as the ML-DSA context
  4. Sign M' with the classical algorithm
  5. Return a JWS General JSON Serialization with one signature: the ML-DSA signature followed by the classical signature
M' = Prefix || Label || 0x00 || PH(M)        # draft-ietf-jose-pq-composite-sigs-04 §4.2

Verification (composite signature validation):

  1. Parse the JWS; exactly one signature is accepted
  2. Check the time claims (iat, exp, nbf) under the SIMPLE rule, read kid and ank_kv from the protected header and check the composite alg
  3. Split the value at the fixed ML-DSA signature length
  4. Recompute M' and verify both components
  5. Return true only if both components verify

🧠 Deterministic RNG

A fixed seed is used in the random number generator (0xC0FFEE_BABEFACE) to ensure reproducible test runs.

📈 Metrics Aggregation

For each metric, the median value across all measurement iterations is recorded, providing robust resistance to outliers.

Metrics Collected

For each combination of (classical_alg, pqc_alg, payload size), the following metrics are measured independently for both signing and verification:

Metric Description Units
CLASSICAL Classical algorithm name (Ed25519, Ed448, P-256, etc.) String
PQC Post-quantum algorithm name (ML-DSA-44, ML-DSA-65, etc.) String
BYTES Payload size in bytes Integer
SIGN Median wall-clock time for signing Milliseconds
VER Median wall-clock time for verification Milliseconds
CPU-S Median thread CPU time for signing Milliseconds
CPU-V Median thread CPU time for verification Milliseconds
MEM-S Median heap delta for signing Kibibytes
MEM-V Median heap delta for verification Kibibytes

Each metric is calculated as the median across the measurement iterations to reduce the influence of transient spikes or system noise.

Execution Notes

  • Composite keys use JWS General JSON Serialization with one composite signature

  • The benchmark is implemented using JUnit 5 with @ParameterizedTest.

  • All runs are sequential to avoid interference from thread scheduling (enforced via @Execution(SAME_THREAD)).

  • Thread CPU-time measurement is required; the test is skipped if unavailable on the system.

  • A deterministic RNG (fixed seed) ensures repeatability.

  • Results are exported as a CSV file: benchmark_composite_sig_20260118_163331.csv

Summary Statistics:

  • Total combinations tested: 11 (4 classical × 3 PQC signatures, EC-521 excluded)
  • Total measurements: 88 (11 combinations × 8 payload sizes)
  • Total bytes processed: 76,707,840 bytes (~76.7 MB)
  • Median signing time: 1.667 ms (across all measurements)
  • Median verification time: 1.503 ms (across all measurements)

Performance Observations

Based on benchmark results with default settings (5 warm-up, 10 measurement iterations):

✅ Acceptable Overhead

Composite signatures add reasonable overhead compared to single-algorithm operations:

  • Small payloads (1-10 KiB): 10-20ms typical total time (signing + verification)
  • Large payloads (1-5 MiB): Signing time increases due to hashing overhead, but remains manageable

🔍 Algorithm Characteristics

Fastest classical signatures:

  • Ed25519: ~1-3ms for sign + verify (small payloads)
  • Ed448: ~3-6ms for sign + verify (small payloads)

Fastest PQC signatures:

  • ML-DSA-44: ~8-12ms for sign + verify (small payloads)
  • ML-DSA-65: ~12-18ms for sign + verify (small payloads)

Combined performance:

  • Ed25519 + ML-DSA-44: ~10-15ms total (sign + verify, 1 KiB payload)
  • Ed448 + ML-DSA-65: ~15-25ms total (sign + verify, 1 KiB payload)

📊 Scalability

  • Linear scaling with payload size (dominated by hashing large payloads)
  • Memory efficiency: Heap deltas generally <10 MiB even for 5 MiB payloads
  • Verification faster than signing: ML-DSA verification is typically ~50-70% faster than signing

🚀 Production Readiness

Composite signatures are production-ready for most enterprise use cases:

  • Document signing: Acceptable latency for payloads up to 1 MiB
  • API authentication: Suitable for JWT-based authentication (small payloads)
  • Code signing: Excellent throughput for software artifacts
  • Quantum resistance: Provides defense-in-depth against both classical and quantum adversaries

Comparison to Single-Algorithm Signatures

Operation Single Algorithm (Ed25519) Composite (Ed25519 + ML-DSA-44) Overhead
1 KiB payload (sign) ~2ms ~8ms ~4×
1 KiB payload (verify) ~1ms ~6ms ~6×
1 MiB payload (sign) ~15ms ~25ms ~1.67×
1 MiB payload (verify) ~10ms ~18ms ~1.8×

Key insight: Overhead decreases as payload size increases (hashing dominates for large payloads, signature generation/verification cost is relatively fixed).

Comparison to Composite Encryption

Metric Composite Encryption (COMPOSITE_KEM_COMBINE) Composite Signature (COMPOSITE_SIGNATURE)
Combinations tested 20 11
Total measurements 160 88
Typical overhead (small payloads) ~2× ~4-6×
Typical overhead (large payloads) ~1.1-1.3× ~1.5-2×
Primary cost driver Symmetric encryption (AES-GCM) Hashing + signature generation
Verification cost ~equal to encryption ~50-70% of signing cost

Takeaway: Composite signatures have higher relative overhead than composite encryption, but absolute times remain acceptable for most use cases.

Test Execution

Running the Benchmark

Default settings (5 warm-up, 10 measurement iterations):

cd ankasecure-core-api
mvn test -Dtest=SCPerformanceEnhancedCompositeSignatureTest

Custom iteration counts:

mvn test -Dtest=SCPerformanceEnhancedCompositeSignatureTest \
  -Dsc.perf.warmup=10 \
  -Dsc.perf.measurements=20

Expected runtime: ~15-25 minutes with default settings

Security Considerations

✅ Defense-in-Depth

Composite signatures provide dual-layer security:

  • Classical signature protects against current threats
  • PQC signature protects against future quantum threats
  • All-or-nothing verification: the composite is valid only when both components verify, so neither algorithm can stand in for the other

✅ Algorithm Diversity

Combining different algorithm families (ECC + lattice-based) reduces risk of common-mode failures:

  • Ed25519/Ed448: Discrete logarithm problem (DLP) hardness
  • ML-DSA: Module-LWE (Learning With Errors) hardness

⚠️ Signature Size

Composite signatures are larger than single signatures:

  • Ed25519 signature: 64 bytes
  • ML-DSA-44 signature: 2,420 bytes
  • Composite (Ed25519 + ML-DSA-44): one value of 2,420 + 64 = 2,484 bytes, plus one protected header
  • An ECDSA component is a DER Ecdsa-Sig-Value of variable length (at most 72 bytes on P-256)

Mitigation: Use compression (gzip) for network transmission if signature size is a concern.
