ANKASecure Composite Resign Micro-Benchmark

Overview

This document describes the methodology, scope, and results of the SecureCore Composite Resign Micro-Benchmark, a performance test suite designed to evaluate the cryptographic efficiency of COMPOSITE_SIGNATURE composite key resigning operations in the AnkaSecure system.

This benchmark systematically measures composite signature resigning performance for hybrid composite keys that combine classical and post-quantum signature algorithms across multiple payload sizes. The resign operation validates an existing composite JWS and generates a new composite signature with a different composite key, providing empirical evidence of the platform's ability to deliver quantum-resistant signature rotation with acceptable performance overhead.

Timings owed to a re-measurement

Every timing, CPU and heap figure on this page — the result tables, the CSV sample, the analysis and the conclusions drawn from them — was measured on 2026-01-18, when a composite key produced two separate signatures over the payload. The platform's composite key produces one composite signature over the JWS Signing Input (the IETF composite ML-DSA construction, described below). No timing has been measured for that construction yet, so no figure on this page describes it: the figures below are the earlier construction's and must not be quoted as the performance of the current one. The method, the formats and the signature sizes on this page are current.

The figures are owed to a measurement run of SCPerformanceEnhancedCompositeResignTest in ankasecure-core-api (mvn test -Dsc.suite.exclude=none -Dgroups=performance -Dtest=SCPerformanceEnhancedCompositeResignTest), and are replaced with that run's output, dated, when it is made.

Objectives

The goals of this benchmark are to:

  • Validate the efficiency and scalability of SecureCore's composite resign operations for quantum-resistant key rotation.

  • Compare classical and post-quantum algorithm combinations in signature rotation workflows.

  • Quantify the performance overhead of composite signature verification and regeneration.

  • Provide externally auditable evidence of the platform's enterprise-grade composite resign capabilities.

Scope

  • Operations:

    • Composite signature validation of the existing JWS General JSON token (both components must verify)
    • Composite signature generation with the new composite key, producing a new JWS General JSON token with one composite signature
  • Composite Mode: COMPOSITE_SIGNATURE

    • Combines classical signature with post-quantum signature
    • All-or-nothing verification: both components must verify
    • Security level difference constraint: ≤ 2 steps
    • Only RECOMMENDED algorithms with allowedInComposite=true

How It Works

🔁 Iteration Process

  1. Initial Composite Key Generation: A source composite key is generated with:

    • Mode: COMPOSITE_SIGNATURE
    • Components: classical algorithm (role="classical") + PQC algorithm (role="pqc")
    • Standard test parameters: 100K max usage, 365-day expiry
  2. Target Composite Key Generation: A new target composite key is generated (different key material, same algorithm combination)

  3. Initial Signing: Create an initial JWS General JSON signature with the source composite key

  4. Warm-up Loop: The system runs several resign operations to stabilize JIT compilation and memory allocation

  5. Measurement Loop: The following metrics are collected per iteration:

    • Wall-clock time for resigning (milliseconds)
    • Thread-level CPU time for resigning (milliseconds)
    • Heap memory delta during resigning (KiB)
  6. Validation:

    • The new signature must verify successfully with the target composite key
    • The benchmark fails the iteration if verification returns false or signature is null

🔐 Composite Resigning Process

Resign operation (composite verification + composite signing):

  1. Parse the existing JWS; exactly one signature is accepted
  2. Recompute the source message representative M' from its protected header and payload, and verify both components against the source key's material that ank_kv selects
  3. Refuse the resign unless both components verify
  4. Build the target protected header (composite alg, kid, ank_kv, and a fresh iat) and its M'
  5. Sign the target M' with ML-DSA (context = Label) and with the classical algorithm
  6. Return a new JWS General JSON Serialization with one composite signature
M' = Prefix || Label || 0x00 || PH(M)        # draft-ietf-jose-pq-composite-sigs-04 §4.2

🧠 Deterministic RNG

A fixed seed is used in the random number generator (0xC0FFEE_BABEFACE) to ensure reproducible test runs.

📈 Metrics Aggregation

For each metric, the median value across all measurement iterations is recorded, providing robust resistance to outliers.

Metrics Collected

For each combination of (classical_alg, pqc_alg, payload size), the following metrics are measured for resigning:

Metric Description Units
CLASSICAL Classical algorithm name (Ed25519, Ed448, P-256, etc.) String
PQC Post-quantum algorithm name (ML-DSA-44, ML-DSA-65, etc.) String
BYTES Payload size in bytes Integer
RESIGN Median wall-clock time for resigning Milliseconds
CPU-R Median thread CPU time for resigning Milliseconds
MEM-R Median heap delta for resigning Kibibytes

Each metric is calculated as the median across the measurement iterations to reduce the influence of transient spikes or system noise.

Execution Notes

  • Composite keys use JWS General JSON Serialization with one composite signature

  • The benchmark is implemented using JUnit 5 with @ParameterizedTest

  • All runs are sequential to avoid interference from thread scheduling (enforced via @Execution(SAME_THREAD))

  • Thread CPU-time measurement is required; the test is skipped if unavailable on the system

  • A deterministic RNG (fixed seed) ensures repeatability

  • Results are exported as a CSV file: benchmark_composite_resign_20260118_171101.csv

  • Median resigning time: 2.5 ms (across all measurements)

Performance Observations

Based on benchmark results with default settings (5 warm-up, 10 measurement iterations):

✅ Efficient Composite Key Rotation

Composite resign operations add reasonable overhead compared to single-algorithm resign:

  • Small payloads (1-10 KiB): 11-20ms typical resign time
  • Large payloads (1-5 MiB): Resign time increases due to the verification and signing overhead (2026-01-18 measurement)

🔍 Algorithm Characteristics

Fastest classical signatures:

  • Ed25519: ~11-17ms resign time (small payloads)
  • Ed448: ~12-17ms resign time (small payloads)
  • P-256: ~15-19ms resign time (small payloads)

Fastest PQC signatures:

  • ML-DSA-44: ~17-21ms resign time (small payloads)
  • ML-DSA-65: ~16-22ms resign time (small payloads)
  • ML-DSA-87: ~18-23ms resign time (small payloads)

Combined performance:

  • Ed25519 + ML-DSA-44: ~11-17ms resign time (1-100 KiB payloads)

  • P-384 + ML-DSA-87: ~18-21ms resign time (1-100 KiB payloads)

📊 Scalability

  • Linear scaling with payload size (dominated by hashing large payloads)
  • Memory efficiency: Heap deltas generally <110 KiB even for 5 MiB payloads
  • Verification + Signing overhead: Combined operation is typically ~2× single signature resign

🚀 Production Readiness

Composite resign operations are production-ready for quantum-resistant key rotation:

  • Key lifecycle management: Acceptable latency for rotating composite keys
  • Certificate renewal: Suitable for composite-signature certificate re-issuance
  • Quantum migration: Practical performance for transitioning between composite key pairs
  • Defense-in-depth: Provides quantum resistance with minimal performance penalty

1 MiB payload ~57ms ~42ms ~0.74×
5 MiB payload N/A ~188ms N/A

Key insight: Overhead decreases as payload size increases (hashing dominates for large payloads, composite signature generation/verification cost is relatively fixed).

Comparison to Composite Signing

Metric Composite Sign (COMPOSITE_SIGNATURE) Composite Resign (COMPOSITE_SIGNATURE)
Operations Composite signing only Composite verification + composite signing
Typical time (small payloads) ~4-8ms ~11-20ms
Typical time (large payloads) ~90-190ms ~150-210ms
Primary cost driver Composite signing Composite verification + composite signing

Takeaway: Resign adds verification overhead (~1.5-2× slower than signing), but remains acceptable for key rotation scenarios.

Test Execution

Running the Benchmark

Default settings (5 warm-up, 10 measurement iterations):

cd ankasecure-core-api
mvn test -Dtest=SCPerformanceEnhancedCompositeResignTest

Custom iteration counts:

mvn test -Dtest=SCPerformanceEnhancedCompositeResignTest \
  -Dsc.perf.warmup=10 \
  -Dsc.perf.measurements=20

Expected runtime: ~10-15 minutes with default settings

Output Location

CSV file exported to:

/tmp/sc_bench_<random>/benchmark_composite_resign_YYYYMMDD_HHMMSS.csv

Console output shows ASCII table with all measurements sorted by (CLASSICAL, PQC, BYTES).

CSV Data Format

The exported CSV file contains the following columns:

CLASSICAL,PQC,BYTES,RESIGN_MS,CPU_RESIGN_MS,RESIGN_MEM_KIB
Ed25519,ML-DSA-44,1024,11,15,0
Ed25519,ML-DSA-44,5120,12,7,0
...

Use cases:

  • Import into spreadsheet tools (Excel, Google Sheets) for analysis
  • Generate charts and visualizations
  • Statistical analysis (percentiles, distributions)

Location: ankasecure-core-api/src/test/java/co/ankatech/ankasecure/core/controller/

Key dependencies:

  • SecureCoreTestHelper.getValidCOMPOSITE_SIGNATURECombinations() - Dynamic combination discovery
  • SecureCoreTestHelper.generateCompositeKey() - Composite key generation
  • SecureCoreController.resignCompositeJws() - Composite JWS resign operation

Thread safety: Single-threaded execution (@Execution(SAME_THREAD))

Lifecycle: Per-class instance (@TestInstance(Lifecycle.PER_CLASS))

Security Considerations

✅ Defense-in-Depth

Composite resign maintains dual-layer security throughout key rotation:

  • Classical signature validation protects against current threats
  • PQC signature validation protects against future quantum threats
  • All-or-nothing verification: both components of the source signature must verify before resigning

✅ Algorithm Diversity

Combining different algorithm families (ECC + lattice-based) reduces risk during key rotation:

  • Ed25519/Ed448: Discrete logarithm problem (DLP) hardness
  • ML-DSA: Module-LWE (Learning With Errors) hardness

⚠️ Signature Size During Rotation

Composite resign operations maintain large signature sizes:

  • Ed25519 + ML-DSA-44: 2,420 + 64 = 2,484 bytes per composite signature
  • During rotation: Two composite signatures exist temporarily (old + new)

Mitigation: Implement proper signature cleanup after successful rotation verification.

Conclusion

This benchmark provides strong, reproducible evidence that SecureCore's composite resign operations:

  • Efficiently support quantum-resistant key rotation across a wide variety of hybrid classical+PQC algorithm combinations.

  • Perform reliably across payload sizes, from small tokens to multi-megabyte files.

  • Offer acceptable overhead for composite signature verification and regeneration, critical for secure key lifecycle management.

  • Demonstrate that composite key rotation is production-ready for enterprise deployment with performance comparable to single-algorithm operations.

These results demonstrate SecureCore's readiness for quantum-safe key rotation, regulatory compliance, and future-proof cryptographic agility in key management scenarios.
