ANKASecure Composite Encryption/Decryption Micro-Benchmark
Overview
This document describes the methodology, scope, and results of the SecureCore Composite Encryption/Decryption Micro-Benchmark, a performance test suite that evaluates the cryptographic efficiency of COMPOSITE_KEM_COMBINE composite keys in the AnkaSecure platform.
The benchmark measures encryption and decryption throughput using JWE General JSON Serialization (RFC 7516) for hybrid composite keys that combine classical and post-quantum Key Encapsulation Mechanisms (KEMs). Metrics include wall-clock time, thread CPU time, and heap deltas, providing reproducible evidence of the platform's ability to deliver quantum-resistant encryption with acceptable performance overhead.
Scope
-
Operations:
- Encryption that produces a JWE General JSON Serialization token with dual recipient entries (classical + PQC)
- Decryption by parsing and validating the resulting JWE General JSON token using composite key decapsulation
-
Composite Mode: COMPOSITE_KEM_COMBINE
- Combines classical KEM with post-quantum KEM
- Current construction: the key's KDF token (
HKDF-SHA256by default) instantiates the NIST SP 800-227 §4.6.1 key combiner; the recorded runs predate it (see the note under How It Works) - Security level difference constraint: ≤ 2 steps
- Only RECOMMENDED algorithms with
allowedInComposite=true
-
Algorithms Tested: 20 valid combinations discovered dynamically from the algorithm catalog:
- Classical KEMs: X25519, X448, P-256, P-384, P-521 (RSA excluded from composite)
- PQC KEMs: ML-KEM-512, ML-KEM-768, ML-KEM-1024, HQC-128, HQC-192, HQC-256
-
Payload Sizes: 1 KiB, 5 KiB, 10 KiB, 50 KiB, 100 KiB, 500 KiB, 1 MiB, 5 MiB
-
Iteration Strategy:
- Warm-up iterations:
5(configurable viasc.perf.warmup) - Measurement iterations:
10(configurable viasc.perf.measurements)
- Warm-up iterations:
-
Total Measurements: 160 (20 combinations × 8 payload sizes)

Valid Combinations (20 total)
The benchmark dynamically discovers valid combinations using:
- Security level difference ≤ 2 (e.g., X25519 L2 + ML-KEM-512 L1 ✅, X25519 L2 + ML-KEM-1024 L5 ❌)
- RECOMMENDED status only
- Catalog flag:
allowedInComposite=true
Example combinations:
- X25519 + ML-KEM-768 (L2 + L3 = Δ1)
- X448 + ML-KEM-1024 (L3 + L5 = Δ2)
- P-256 + HQC-128 (L2 + L1 = Δ1)
- P-384 + HQC-192 (L3 + L3 = Δ0)
- P-521 + HQC-256 (L4 + L5 = Δ1)
Measured on the earlier composite construction
The timings on this page were recorded on 2026-01-18, on the composite construction that preceded the current key combiner: one random content key was wrapped under each component. The steps under How It Works describe the current construction (two real KEMs and the NIST SP 800-227 key combiner), which moves the per-operation cost and the size of each encrypted_key. On that build an HQC-192 or HQC-256 key also carried HQC-128 material, so the HQC-192 and HQC-256 rows measure the HQC-128 parameter set. Re-run the benchmark before quoting a composite figure.
How It Works
🔁 Iteration Process
-
Composite Key Generation: A fresh composite key is generated with:
- Mode:
COMPOSITE_KEM_COMBINE - KDF:
HKDF-SHA256 - Components: classical algorithm (role="classical") + PQC algorithm (role="pqc")
- Standard test parameters: 100K max usage, 365-day expiry
- Mode:
-
Warm-up Loop: The system runs several encrypt/decrypt operations to stabilize JIT compilation and memory allocation.
-
Measurement Loop: The following metrics are collected per iteration:
- Wall-clock time for encryption and decryption (milliseconds)
- Thread-level CPU time for encryption and decryption (milliseconds)
- Heap memory delta during encryption and decryption (KiB)
-
Validation:
- The decrypted result is compared with the original input to ensure correctness.
- The benchmark fails the iteration if ciphertext is
nullor content mismatches.
🔐 Composite Encryption Process
Encryption (encapsulation):
- Generate ephemeral key pair for classical KEM (e.g., X25519 ephemeral private key)
- No ephemeral key pair for the PQC KEM: ML-KEM / HQC encapsulation draws its own randomness
- Perform classical KEM:
ss_classical = ECDH(ephemeral_sk, recipient_pk); the ephemeral public key is the ciphertextct_classical - Perform PQC KEM:
(ss_pqc, ct_pqc) = ML_KEM.Encaps(recipient_pk) - Derive the CEK as the combiner's output:
CEK = KeyCombine(ss_classical, ss_pqc, ct_classical, ct_pqc, pk_classical, pk_pqc, domain) - Encrypt payload with CEK using AES-256-GCM
- Construct JWE General JSON with two recipients (classical + PQC)
Decryption (decapsulation):
- Parse JWE General JSON structure
- Extract classical ciphertext (ephemeral public key)
- Extract PQC ciphertext (ML-KEM/HQC ciphertext)
- Perform classical KEM:
ss_classical = ECDH(recipient_sk, ephemeral_pk) - Perform PQC KEM:
ss_pqc = ML_KEM.Decaps(recipient_sk, ct_pqc) - Derive the CEK as the combiner's output:
CEK = KeyCombine(ss_classical, ss_pqc, ct_classical, ct_pqc, pk_classical, pk_pqc, domain) - Decrypt payload with CEK
🧠 Deterministic RNG
A fixed seed is used in the random number generator (0xC0FFEE_BABEFACE) to ensure reproducible test runs.
📈 Metrics Aggregation
For each metric, the median value across all measurement iterations is recorded, providing robust resistance to outliers.

Execution Notes
-
Composite keys use JWE General JSON Serialization (not Compact Serialization, which only supports single recipients)
-
The benchmark is implemented using JUnit 5 with
@ParameterizedTestand@MethodSourcefor dynamic combination discovery -
All runs are sequential to avoid interference from thread scheduling (enforced via
@Execution(SAME_THREAD)) -
Thread CPU-time measurement is required; the test is skipped if unavailable on the system
-
Each combination uses an isolated keystore (temporary BKS file) with a unique key identifier
-
Results are exported as a CSV file:

Summary Statistics:
- Total combinations tested: 20 (5 classical × 4-6 PQC KEMs, filtered by security level)
- Total measurements: 160 (20 combinations × 8 payload sizes)
- Total bytes processed: 139,468,800 bytes (~139.5 MB)
- Median encryption time: 3.696 ms (across all measurements)
- Median decryption time: 3.650 ms (across all measurements)
Performance Observations
Based on benchmark results with default settings (5 warm-up, 10 measurement iterations):
✅ Acceptable Overhead
Composite encryption adds minimal overhead compared to single-algorithm operations:
- Small payloads (1-10 KiB): 10-20ms typical total time (encryption + decryption)
- Large payloads (1-5 MiB): Overhead dominated by symmetric encryption (AES-256-GCM), KEM overhead negligible
🔍 Algorithm Characteristics
Fastest classical KEMs:
- X25519: ~2-5ms for KEM operations
- X448: ~5-10ms for KEM operations
Fastest PQC KEMs:
- ML-KEM-512: ~3-7ms for encapsulation + decapsulation
- ML-KEM-768: ~5-10ms for encapsulation + decapsulation
- HQC-128: ~8-15ms for encapsulation + decapsulation
Combined performance:
- X25519 + ML-KEM-768: ~10-15ms total KEM overhead (both encapsulation + decapsulation)
- P-256 + HQC-192: ~15-25ms total KEM overhead
📊 Scalability
- Linear scaling with payload size (dominated by symmetric encryption after KEM operations)
- Memory efficiency: Heap deltas proportional to ciphertext size (PQC ciphertexts larger than classical, but manageable)
🚀 Production Readiness
Composite encryption is production-ready for most enterprise use cases:
- Interactive APIs: Acceptable latency for payloads up to 100 KiB
- Batch processing: Excellent throughput for large files (symmetric encryption dominates)
- Quantum resistance: Provides defense-in-depth against both classical and quantum adversaries
Comparison to Single-Algorithm Encryption
| Operation | Single Algorithm (X25519) | Composite (X25519 + ML-KEM-768) | Overhead |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 KiB payload | ~5ms | ~10ms | ~2× |
| 1 MiB payload | ~20ms | ~25ms | ~1.25× |
| 5 MiB payload | ~75ms | ~85ms | ~1.13× |
Key insight: Overhead decreases as payload size increases (KEM cost is fixed, symmetric encryption cost dominates).
Test Execution
